After kicking off the year with movement, teamwork, and giving back, we’re keeping the momentum going with our second wellbeing challenge.
February Wellbeing Challenge: Dry February 💙
We’re a little late to the party, but this February we’re inviting everyone to take part in Dry February - a month-long break from alcohol, as part of our ongoing commitment to wellbeing and giving back.
This isn’t about labels, rules, or judgement.
It’s simply an opportunity to pause, reflect, and support both our own health and the lives of others.
Why try a month without alcohol?
Even a short break from alcohol can have real benefits, including:
-
Better sleep and steadier energy levels
Alcohol disrupts deep, restorative sleep. Cutting it out can leave you feeling more refreshed and energised day to day. -
Improved focus and mental clarity
Alcohol is a depressant and can impact mood and anxiety once the effects wear off. Many people notice clearer thinking and improved mental wellbeing when they stop drinking. -
Support for heart, liver, and immune health
Drinking more than the recommended 14 units per week increases the risk of liver disease, heart disease, and certain cancers. Taking a break helps reduce these risks. -
Better recovery after exercise — and potential weight loss
Two glasses of wine can be over 300 calories, and two pints around 350–450. Reducing alcohol can support recovery, performance, and weight goals. -
Improved financial wellbeing
Cutting out alcohol can free up money for things that matter — whether that’s a future trip or simply a rainy-day fund. -
Healthier, brighter skin
Alcohol can dehydrate the skin. Many people notice clearer, more glowing skin within days of stopping. -
A reset moment to check in with habits
With more energy, better mood, and extra cash, Dry February can be a great chance to explore new hobbies or routines.
Everyone’s relationship with alcohol is different.
This challenge is about choice, curiosity, and self-care - not restriction.
If it feels hard, you’re not alone
For some people, taking a break from alcohol can be unexpectedly challenging — and that’s okay. Support is available:
- Reach out to a trusted colleague or friend
- Speak to your GP or a support service
- Contact a local charity such as Change Grow Live – Substance to Solution Wellingborough
- Ask for help - it’s a strength, not a weakness
Giving back: blood and stem cell donation ❤️
Alongside Dry February, we’re also raising awareness of blood and stem cell donation — simple actions that can save or transform lives.
- Blood donation supports accident victims, cancer patients, and people with long-term conditions
- Stem cell donation can be life-saving for someone with blood cancer or a serious blood disorder
If you’re eligible, consider donating, registering, or simply sharing the message.
Why donate blood or stem cells?
1. You can save lives - literally
- One blood donation can help up to three people
- For many patients, a stem cell donor isn’t just helpful — they’re essential
2. It’s one of the most impactful ways to help
- Blood donation takes about an hour
- Stem cell registration usually starts with a simple swab
A small action from you can change someone’s future.
3. Health checks and reassurance
- Blood donors receive basic checks such as haemoglobin levels and blood pressure
- While not a full medical check-up, it can highlight issues worth following up
4. It boosts wellbeing
Many donors report:
- A strong sense of purpose
- Increased connection to their community
- Improved mental wellbeing
Helping others often helps us feel better too.
5. It’s safe, regulated, and supported
- Donations are carefully screened and monitored
- Trained staff support you before, during, and after
6. You might be someone’s only match
Especially with stem cell donation, patients often rely on finding a very close genetic match — and that match could be you.
Even if you can’t donate, you can still:
- Encourage others
- Share awareness
- Support donation campaigns
